Alteration of clay minerals by physical and chemical processes and the effects on macroscopic properties

Abstract

The principal objective of this project is to improve the understanding of the behaviour of various clay minerals (montmorillonite, illite and vermiculite) in physical and chemical alteration processes, e.g., in diagenetic and weathering events of soils, rocks, wastes and mine tailings as well as deep geological nuclear waste disposal. Combined investigation of structural changes, incorporation of ions and phase transformations of clay minerals during alteration processes (heat, radiation, pressure) and the relationship to macroscopic chemical and physical properties of such treated clays is the objective of the project.
